Canadian Dental Care Plan: How to Check Eligibility and Apply

Canadian Dental Care Plan eligibility depends on four rules. First, check private dental cover, tax filing, family income and tax residence. Then use an official route to apply. The plan can help with dental costs, but it may not pay the whole bill.

Check all four rules

The official CDCP rules say you must have no access to private dental cover. You must also meet the tax-filing rule, have adjusted family net income below $90,000 and be a Canadian resident for tax purposes.

Your spouse or common-law partner’s details matter too. For example, their work plan may offer you dental cover. Check the rules for your whole family, where they apply.

Unused cover can still count as access. This includes a plan you declined or would have to pay to join. So do not assume you qualify just because you have never made a claim.

However, some government social programs can work with the CDCP. There are also specific exceptions to some rules. Read the official page before changing or cancelling any existing plan.

Gather the details for your request

Next, open the CDCP application page. It lists the details needed for you and any dependants. These include names, birth dates, addresses, SIN details and any relevant government dental cover.

You may also need details about your spouse or partner. However, giving those details does not enrol them. They must apply separately for their own cover.

  1. First, confirm that you meet the four rules.
  2. Next, gather the details listed on the official page.
  3. Then apply through My Service Canada Account or the linked online route.
  4. If you cannot apply online, use the official phone route.
  5. Finally, keep the confirmation and read any follow-up letters.

There is no fee to apply or renew. So avoid a message or ad asking for a card payment to process a required CDCP fee.

Wait for the cover to start

Use the steps after you apply to check the result and start date. Sending a request is not the same as approval. Also, do not assume the plan will pay for earlier care.

Before a visit, give the clinic your confirmed plan details. Ask it to check cover for that date. Then save the start date and any renewal task in your calendar.

Check your share of the cost

The CDCP cost guide lists income-based co-payments. These shares apply to the plan’s set fees, which may differ from a clinic’s fees.

Adjusted family net income Your share of the plan’s set fees
Below $70,000 0%
$70,000–$79,999 40%
$80,000–$89,999 60%

For example, you may still owe money if the clinic charges more than the plan pays. You may also owe for care that is not covered. Some types of care need approval in advance.

Ask for an estimate before treatment

Ask what the clinic plans to do and what you would pay. Also, ask whether it needs approval first. Keep the estimate so you can compare it with the final bill.

Only providers receive payments from the CDCP. So do not assume you can pay the whole bill and later claim it back yourself. Check the process with the clinic before you agree to care.
