Visitor Record vs. Visitor Visa: How to Extend Your Stay in Canada
Visitor record vs visitor visa: the key difference is what each document does. A visa helps you travel to Canada and seek entry when you need one. A visitor record sets out your stay and its end date. So, if you are already here and want more time, check the visitor record route.

Know what each document does
First, read IRCC’s guide to extending a visit. A visitor record is not a visa. It does not guarantee that you can leave Canada and return.
| Document | Main purpose |
|---|---|
| Visitor visa | Travel to Canada and seek entry when a visa is required. |
| Visitor record | Show the terms and end date of a permitted stay. |
Also, do not confuse these with a temporary resident permit. That permit has a separate purpose and rules.

Next, check the stamp in your passport and any status document you received. The expiry date on a visa sticker is not the end date of every visit. For example, a visa valid for several years does not let you stay for all those years at once.
The official rules on who can apply explain the usual six-month stay when there is no stamp. However, a date or condition given for your own stay can change that result. Check it before you make plans.
IRCC advises applying at least 30 days before your status ends. This gives you time to prepare. It does not give you a grace period after your permitted stay ends.

Then make a short note of your entry date and the date you must leave. Add how much extra time you want and why. This helps you keep the dates in your forms and other proof consistent.
Use IRCC Guide 5551 to prepare. The checklist for your case tells you what to send. It may ask for passport details, proof of funds and your plans for the stay.
- First, read the guide and choose the correct online route.
- Next, fill in the forms and add clear copies of the required proof.
- Check names, dates and passport details before sending them.
- Then pay the current official fees, unless an exemption applies.
- Finally, submit the request and save the confirmation.
A saved draft is not a submitted request. So check that the online system confirms you sent it.

The rules after you apply explain maintained status. A timely request can let you stay legally until a decision. However, it does not give visitors a general right to work.
If approved, read the new record and its end date. If refused, act on the decision and the rules for your case. Do not keep treating a decided request as pending.
Check before a trip abroad
Before you leave, check which travel documents you need to return. Also, check how the trip may affect a pending request. A visitor record alone is not proof that you will be allowed back in.
