Ontario Driver's Abstract: Choose and Order the Right Record

An Ontario driver's abstract is a record of your driving. However, that name can mean more than one type of record. Ask the office that wants it which type to buy. A three-year record differs from a licence history. Also, ask if the copy needs the ministry seal.

Which record answers the request?

The Ontario driving record service describes the common three-year record and licence history. The three-year record includes driving-related convictions, suspensions and demerit point details within its scope. A licence history focuses on events such as renewals, replacements and class changes instead.

For example, a request to prove the date you progressed to a licence class may need different details from a request about recent convictions. Do not order a product only because its price or title looks familiar. Get the requested record name in writing where possible.

Do you need a certified copy?

Also, a certified record carries the Ministry of Transportation seal and is commonly needed for legal purposes. An not certified record meets many routine needs, but the recipient decides what it will accept. Ask before ordering rather than assuming a PDF will satisfy a request that clearly needs a seal.

Ontario currently lists $12 for an not certified record and $18 for a certified record. Check the amount and delivery method shown for the product you choose. A different type of record or task should not be assumed to have the same processing or delivery options.

What should you have ready?

  • Your licence or registrant ID details requested by the service.
  • The exact type of record.
  • The recipient's need for a certified copy.
  • An accepted payment method.
  • A secure email or mailing address for the chosen delivery route.

Check the licence number carefully. The online instructions warn that the number is not validated in the way a user might assume. A typing error can mean paying for the wrong request or failing to get the record you intended. Compare the digits with the card before you submit.

How do you order and keep the result?

Choose the official online, in-person or mail route available for the record. Then follow that product's delivery instructions. The common not certified online three-year record is delivered as a PDF by email. Keep the record itself, not just the payment receipt or an image of the order receipt.

When it arrives, check your name, record type and issue details. If the recipient requires a recent record, keep the issue date visible. An old saved copy may show the right person but still fail the recipient's rule about how recent it is.

What personal details should you protect?

Driving records contain ID details. Share the file only through a route you trust and avoid posting it in a public job-search group. If a recipient asks for only part of the record, confirm what it needs before hiding fields. Do not alter the record in a way that makes it look like an unedited official copy.

Also, tell apart your driver's record from a vehicle record. One concerns a person and their licence; the other concerns a vehicle and its sign-up history. An employer's request for a driver's abstract is not usually answered by a package about the car you own.

What if something looks wrong?

Identify the specific entry and keep the supporting record before contacting the right service. Do not edit the PDF yourself to remove a disputed item. Finally, keep the correction request and any updated record together. That helps explain the change if the recipient asks why two versions differ.

Keep the recipient's original request with the record you ordered. That lets you check the product name and date against the exact rule.
